Intranets

A paper examining the evolution of intranets and providing an evaluation of implementation strategy and roles in organisations.  The paper examines the rationale and development of intranets by considering organisational change, the diffusion of innovation and the differing approaches in implementation evidenced in top-down and grass-roots initiatives.

 

Information Systems, Change & Motivation

An short paper discussing why change resulting from the development of new information systems in the workplace may have a significant impact, either adversely or positively, upon the motivation of employees.

 

The Data Protection Act 1998

A report on the legal requirements relating to the storage and use of data, as provisioned within the Data Protection Act 1984 - and subsequently amended 1998.  The Act places significant responsibility on Data Users to administer data within the framework of Key Principles and also gives clear, simple rights to Data Subjects.

Anyone processing personal data must comply with the eight enforceable principles of good practice.  These principles maintain that data must be:

  • fairly and lawfully processed.
  • processed for limited and relevant purposes.
  • adequate, relevant and not excessive.
  • accurate and kept up to date.
  • not kept longer than necessary.
  • processed in accordance with the data subject's rights.
  • secure from unauthorised and unlawful processing.
  • not transferred to countries without adequate protection.
 

Object-Oriented Databases

This paper, in pdf* format, will seek to outline the rationale behind the emergence of object-oriented database systems and will then review the arguments for and against, which have been propounded by various writers.
